Nissan Has Superfast Charging Plan For New LEAF … It Seems

July 3rd, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

For years now, we and many others have been saying that no company can compete with Tesla in the electric car market until they offer a good network of superfast charging stations for their drivers. One year ago, there was no solid information anything like this was in the plans, but one had to think it was. Today, we have news of a coalition of automakers working on it in Europe and ChargePoint and EVgo developing such stations in the US, but it seems that every other automaker is years behind Tesla in this regard. That said, it seems Nissan may be the first to try to compete

Tesla Model 3 Month Is Here

July 1st, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said on multiple occasions in the past year that the target was to start production of the Tesla Model 3 in July. When he first said this (on one of Tesla's quarterly conference calls), he was very hesitant to say it because he indicated it was a strict target for suppliers specifically because they knew not all suppliers would end up meeting the target. To try to really meet the target (or not go far beyond it), Tesla had penalties in place for suppliers who missed the deadline. Furthermore, as a backup, Tesla said it was preparing production capacity for any critical parts of the car itself in case its suppliers fell through

Electric Car Market Up 27% In Europe

July 1st, 2017 | by Jose Pontes

The European passenger plug-in market had more than 21,000 registrations last month, up 48% over the same month last year. Year-t0-date, the market is up 27% this year, with the EV share standing at 1.4%. With quality control issues solved in the second half of the month, the Renault Zoe was once again Master in Command, with the BMW i3 and Outlander PHEV recovering some ground over the ageing Nissan Leaf

Where Tesla Autopilot Truly Shines

July 1st, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

My second "real," long drive on Autopilot (from Wroclaw to Berlin) demonstrated to me two places in which Autopilot is brilliantly lovable. These, imho, are the situations in which Autopilot is like collecting mushrooms in Mario Bros

1st Real Drive With Tesla Autopilot (Including A Few “Warning Shots”)

June 25th, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

I first experienced Tesla Autopilot last year, as I wrote in my Tesla Model X review. It was certainly cool and interesting, and a bit nerve-racking. But that was a short test drive on a California highway — not real use. Well, a few guys and I recently got our first Tesla Model S for an intercity Tesla shuttle service we're launching here in Europe (... called Tesla Shuttle), and the Tesla includes Autopilot

Life With The Chevy Bolt — The First 1,200 Miles

June 25th, 2017 | by Guest Contributor

Kyle Field did a great job reviewing the Bolt, what I thought I'd do here is share some views on why we leased it and also give our hands-on impressions over the last 1,200 miles

28–40% of EV Drivers Have Solar Panels (CleanTechnica EV Report)

June 25th, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

Previous surveys — including our initial EV driver survey — have found a strong link between driving electric cars and having home solar panels. Yet again, in our 2017 EV driver report, a very large portion of our respondents had home solar panels, which means that they are essentially “fueling” their electric cars with sunshine

Investing In The Future

June 24th, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

Investing is sort of always kind of supposed to be about the future, right? The challenge that has faced many an investor is that the future can be hard to predict. As it turns out, that leads much of the investment community to look at the past and extrapolate forward

Cleantech Fun In Berlin — June 27

June 23rd, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

We're now announcing the plan for June 27, which involves some social networking, good food, and an EV charging walking tour that involves a "scathing critique" of EV charging stations, cleantech communications, and branding. Here's the schedule

How Far Behind Tesla Is Big Auto? How Long Till It Catches Up?

June 23rd, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

It may seem absurd to put Tesla ahead of Big Auto, but by many standards, Tesla seems to be far ahead. You don't have to take my word for it — Tesla [TSLA] is now the most valuable US car company, recently surpassing GM and Ford in market cap, and there's a reason or 10 why the investment community on the whole sees Tesla as a more valuable company despite drastically lower annual production/sales output. This article isn't about proving that Tesla's ahead, though. It's actually a genuine, open-minded search for how long it'll take Big Auto to catch up to Tesla ... if it ever can. One widely held assumption is that large automakers can turn on a dime and crush Tesla at its own game "once the time is right." That's not true

What Now, Tesla Naysayers?

June 18th, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

They said Tesla wouldn't do it, couldn't do it. They said Tesla would collapse before the Model S was produced. They said manufacturing inexperience would doom the Model S and destroy the company. They said the Model X was a colossal disaster that would mark the beginning of the end for Tesla. They said the Model X was impossible, a con, a lie, couldn't be manufactured, wouldn't function, and would quickly close the Elon era. They were wrong

What Happens When The Oil Economy Collapses?

June 17th, 2017 | by Zachary Shahan

The question is simple and stark, but there will be a gradient of effects, and side-effects, and after-effects. As the oil economy collapses, the world will change. And it will change a great deal
